Each month, Dovetail will spotlight one of our eco-friendly flooring collections. Our September spotlight is CORKART.
What are the benefits of cork flooring?
#1 Cork has a comfortable and cushioned surface. One of the first things you notice about cork is its soft and yielding surface. Therefore, it’s perfect for rooms where you stand for long periods of time, such as in the kitchen. Cork also has a cushioned surface that makes it the perfect choice for play rooms; it provides a certain level of protection should your child trip and fall.
#2 Cork is hypoallergenic. Therefore, it will repel dust, hair, and other small particles from its surface. As a result, cork flooring is much easier to get completely clean, unlike carpet. Cork is also anti-microbial, so it does not emit an VOC emissions and is resistant to mould and mildew. This makes it the perfect choice for those suffering from asthma and allergies.
#3 Cork is a worthwhile insulator. As it is made from millions of tiny air-filled chambers, cork will effectively insulate both sound and heat. Therefore, should you suffer from noisy neighbours, cork flooring will reduce noise from being transferring through the floor. Rising heating bills can also be a problem; however, cork will reduce the loss of heat from a room in the winter.
What makes cork environmentally friendly?
Cork is natural, recyclable and a sustainable alternative to many man-made materials. It is also biodegradable, so it can break down into natural materials without causing harm to the environment.
The cork oak survives with without the use of chemical herbicides, fertilisers or irrigation. In fact, it is the only tree that can harvest its own bark! Furthermore, stripping does not harm the tree; this is because the bark regenerates naturally.
What collections do CORKART offer?
The Cork Concept collection is home to some of the most popular CORKART designs. Its ambience creates a warm, comfortable surface that inhibits the conduction of temperature and sound, while the flooring is also remarkably resilient to wear and tear.
Choose from two different systems. Floating (eco friendly floating floor) provides superior comfort and quick installation, while Glue Down (eco friendly floor tiles) are warm and comfortable underfoot.
The Fusion Concept collection offers new and technologically advanced flooring. It combines the excellent properties of cork—such as impact sound reduction, warmth and comfort—with the high resistance, beautiful look and realistic touch of a vinyl floor.
Fusion Concept is easy to clean, comfy underfoot and has excellent acoustic properties due to its cork backing. It is also resistant to sunlight, stains and chemicals due to its high performance top coating.
The Vinyl Concept collection is a new generation of technologically advanced vinyl floors. The realistic decor add style, design, and personality to your space. It is wear resistant, comfortable to live on and easy to maintain, with excellent acoustic properties due to its natural cork backing.
Advantages of Vinyl Concept flooring includes its outstanding comfort, realistic look and incredible durability, as well as its incredible resistance to wear, dents, tearing, moisture damage and staining. It is also 100% non-toxic and is suitable for approved underfloor heating.
Discover the pros and cons of different pet-friendly flooring options to find the perfect fit for your furry friends.
Option #1 // Hardwood
Hardwood flooring exudes a sophisticated, classic finish and remains a staple flooring choice for many homes. But as it is vulnerable to stains and water damage, it may not be the wise choice for pet owners. However, there are some pet-friendly hardwood materials, including oak, maple, walnut, mahogany, and bamboo. On the other hand, softwoods, such as pine, chestnut, and fir, are easily susceptible to dents and scratches.
The harder the wood, the more greater its resistance to nail scratches. Therefore, take a look at the Janka Hardness Scale when selecting your flooring: the higher the number, the harder the wood. Any rating below 850 is classified as softwood, while a rating above 1250 is classified as hardwood.
Pros: Comes is a variety of colours and finishes; easy to vacuum.
Cons: Expensive; vulnerable to water damage; easily stains.
Option #2 // Carpet
Wall-to-wall carpeting provides a comfortable lounging area for pets, especially when most of our furry friends spend a lot of time asleep! Carpet also provides a non-slip surface, unlike tile and hardwood flooring which can cause footpads to skid about, and absorbs animal noises for a more peaceful atmosphere.
Carpet is usually made from wool, natural fibres, or synthetic fibres, such as nylon and polyester. While wool carpet is the softest and most luxurious underfoot, it is more expensive than synthetic fibres and not as resistant to stains. Nylon carpets, however, are durable, stain-resistant and affordable, making it a popular choice for households with pets. However, try and avoid loop carpets as your pet’s nails may snag on the loops.
Pros: Comfortable underfoot; non-slip surface; comes is a variety of colours.
Cons: Difficult to clean; vulnerable to wear and tear.
Option #3 // Cork
Cork flooring is eco-friendly and will reduce the growth of mould and other allergens. What’s more, it is warm and pliable, making it comfortable underfoot and able to withstand foot traffic very well. It also absorbs sound, so you don’t need to worry about the constant tapping of pet nails all day!
Cork flooring is far more scratch-resistant than other natural woods options. Cork is a generally resistant material that is both naturally impact resistant and boasts anti-slip properties. Therefore, your pets don’t need to use their claws to move around, so the number of animal claw marks on your floor is significantly reduced.
Pros: Water resistant; needs little maintenance; absorbs sound.
Cons: Discolours overtime; heavy furniture can cause permanent indents.
Option #4 // Laminate
Laminate flooring is often a popular choice for pet owners who like the look of hardwood, but want an easy-to-clean surface. However, the popular choice of smooth, glossy laminate floor can reduce your pet’s traction and easily cause them to slip. Therefore, a textured or embossed laminate finish is far more sensible.
Pros: Easy-to-clean; water-resistant; less noticeable scratches.
Cons: Slippery surface; not as “classic” as hardwood.
Option #5 // Stone
Stone tiles are a great option for pet owners. Not only is it highly durable and scratch-resistant, it’s wipe-clean surface lets you quickly deal with any “accidents” or spills. While most tiles are scratch-resistant, some materials are more porous that others. Therefore, softer stones, such as marble, will require more treatment.
A significant downside to stone tiles are their hard, cold surface. It offers little to no comfort or warmth to your pet, so consider incorporating underfloor heating or area rugs throughout your home. What’s more, a pet bed may prove essential if you want your pet to have a cosy place to relax.
Pros: Scratch-resistant; easy-to-clean.
Cons: Cold, hard surface; slippery surface.
Option #6 // Vinyl
Vinyl is an extremely affordable flooring option that can be easily installed throughout you home. Not only does it provide great traction for your pet, it also comes in a wide range of colours and designs, including natural-looking luxury vinyl. Now you can have durable pet-friendly flooring without compromising on style!
Pros: Resistant to scratches and stains; easy-to-clean; low allergy; quiet underfoot.
Cons: Dulls easily; water spills can cause mildew or peeling.

The dining room can be the heart of any family home.
Even if it’s only used for special occasions — or in some cases, barely at all — the dining room should be treated as more than “just a place to eat”. It’s a social space where the family can come together, whether it be to dine, talk about their day, or even to take part in a family game night!
The flexibility of a dining room allows you to tailor it perfectly to your needs. From formal dinners to a cosy alcove for drinks and nibbles, Dovetail have assembled our top tips to organising the perfect dining room layout.
Is your room mostly used for formal dining?
A large table with extendable leaves is the perfect choice. Should you need to entertain large crowds — such as for a family gathering — you can easily add leaves to reach your perfect size. And once the party is over? Simply remove the leaves for a smaller, more personal dining space.
Introduce a serving table to the room if you usually host large numbers of people. This way you can spread your dishes “buffet-style across the room”, so the table feels less cramped and more inviting.
A large, sturdy table is also the perfect companion for a study. Why not add some bookshelves to the room so it can act as a study outside of dining time? It could equally become a space to relax with the newspaper and a coffee.
Do you feel your dining room is too small to utilise?
Nonsense! You just need to follow these very simple (but very effective) tips. A round pedestal table with armless chairs will create the illusion of a larger space, as will a monochromatic palette.
It’s important to keep the floor and walls clutter-free and minimal; if the space is filled with side tables, bookshelves and lamps, you are simply introducing more corners to wiggle around, and the room feels all the smaller for it.
But what about flooring?
Obviously, the more often you use your dining room, you will need a more hard-wearing flooring than if it only used for special occasions. Laminate flooring may be a cost-efficient choice, but it beautifully compliments any wooden furniture. It is also easy to clean and stain resistant, so is perfect for heavily frequented dining areas.
Alternatively, carpets can equally work as well in your dining room. They also add warmth and comfort (often missing due to the minimalist furniture) while a fresh, neutral colour choice can help to brighten the space.
Dovetail have a variety of dining furniture and flooring available.
Did you know 1 and a half acres of forest are cut down every second?
Even more shocking, estimates from the United Nations suggest 18 million acres of forest are lost each year. This is a staggering number, so Dovetail are passionate about making a change.
We are so excited to introduce our NEW range of eco-friendly carpets and flooring. Some of the biggest names in environmentally progressive textiles are now available at our Norwich showroom, including Riviera, Ted Todd and Forbo. 100% natural and renewable, these stylish collections both look good AND help protect the Earth.
Simple yet sophisticated, the indulgently tactile designs of Alternative Flooring are perfect for any home. Every one of their carpets are made from ethically-sourced fibres. From the soft, silky textures of the Tiliaceae plant to the pure, white fibres of the Agave Sisalana plant, these innovative designs are both natural and sustainable.
Alternative Flooring use 100% wool fibres for their stunning wool collections. Their Barefoot collection is made using completely natural, undyed wool and handwoven using traditional looms.
A truly eco-friendly carpet solution. Their bio-degradable, ethically-sourced carpets are crafted from 100% natural and sustainable resources — one of only a few working manufacturers to do this.
Did you know 90% of carpets take up to 500 years to break-down in the soil? This is because they are crafted using man-made fibres, such as Nylon, Polypropylene or Polyester. These fibres derive from oil, so the toxins released can be really harmful for the environment. But not Riviera!
Riviera carpets take between one to five years to naturally bio-degrade. Plus, as they are made from 100% natural resources, no harmful chemicals or VOCs will be released into the soil.
What’s more, Riviera Home™ have recently introduced their exciting new eco-collections, crafted from 100% natural wool. Therefore, no dyestuffs, chemicals or stain blocking treatments were added during their creation.
For over 20 years, Ted Todd have pushed the boundaries for wooden flooring. As a result, they are now one of the world’s leading flooring brands. Completely unrivalled in quality and creativity, their beautiful, innovative wooden floors are both stunning AND environmentally friendly.
Ted Todd ensure all of their flooring is responsibly sourced. In fact, 95% of their wood is FSC® and PEFC certified. Indeed, their wooden floors are crafted using 100% natural hardwood with ZERO emissions or harmful pollutants!
In a world of environmental awareness, CORKART utilise cork — a natural, bio-degradable and 100% sustainable resource — to craft warm, luxurious and comfortable flooring.
Cork is an incredible material. Harvested from the Cork Oak, it survives without the need for fertiliser, irrigation or chemical herbicides. In fact, it is the only tree where the bark regenerates naturally, meaning it can be sustainably stripped without the tree being harmed.
What’s more, the bark from the Cork Oak retains a significant amount of CO2 while it grows, while also helping support natural biodiversity, such as shrubs and wildlife.
Marmoleum by Forbo
Marmoleum a natural floor covering that’s over 150 years old. Associated with durability, quality, sustainability and truly innovative design, it’s created from 97% natural raw materials, including flax, linseed, rosin and limestone.
