Did you know 1 and a half acres of forest are cut down every second?
Even more shocking, estimates from the United Nations suggest 18 million acres of forest are lost each year. This is a staggering number, so Dovetail are passionate about making a change.
We are so excited to introduce our NEW range of eco-friendly carpets and flooring. Some of the biggest names in environmentally progressive textiles are now available at our Norwich showroom, including Riviera, Ted Todd and Forbo. 100% natural and renewable, these stylish collections both look good AND help protect the Earth.
Simple yet sophisticated, the indulgently tactile designs of Alternative Flooring are perfect for any home. Every one of their carpets are made from ethically-sourced fibres. From the soft, silky textures of the Tiliaceae plant to the pure, white fibres of the Agave Sisalana plant, these innovative designs are both natural and sustainable.
Alternative Flooring use 100% wool fibres for their stunning wool collections. Their Barefoot collection is made using completely natural, undyed wool and handwoven using traditional looms.
A truly eco-friendly carpet solution. Their bio-degradable, ethically-sourced carpets are crafted from 100% natural and sustainable resources — one of only a few working manufacturers to do this.
Did you know 90% of carpets take up to 500 years to break-down in the soil? This is because they are crafted using man-made fibres, such as Nylon, Polypropylene or Polyester. These fibres derive from oil, so the toxins released can be really harmful for the environment. But not Riviera!
Riviera carpets take between one to five years to naturally bio-degrade. Plus, as they are made from 100% natural resources, no harmful chemicals or VOCs will be released into the soil.
What’s more, Riviera Home™ have recently introduced their exciting new eco-collections, crafted from 100% natural wool. Therefore, no dyestuffs, chemicals or stain blocking treatments were added during their creation.
For over 20 years, Ted Todd have pushed the boundaries for wooden flooring. As a result, they are now one of the world’s leading flooring brands. Completely unrivalled in quality and creativity, their beautiful, innovative wooden floors are both stunning AND environmentally friendly.
Ted Todd ensure all of their flooring is responsibly sourced. In fact, 95% of their wood is FSC® and PEFC certified. Indeed, their wooden floors are crafted using 100% natural hardwood with ZERO emissions or harmful pollutants!
In a world of environmental awareness, CORKART utilise cork — a natural, bio-degradable and 100% sustainable resource — to craft warm, luxurious and comfortable flooring.
Cork is an incredible material. Harvested from the Cork Oak, it survives without the need for fertiliser, irrigation or chemical herbicides. In fact, it is the only tree where the bark regenerates naturally, meaning it can be sustainably stripped without the tree being harmed.
What’s more, the bark from the Cork Oak retains a significant amount of CO2 while it grows, while also helping support natural biodiversity, such as shrubs and wildlife.
Marmoleum by Forbo
Marmoleum a natural floor covering that’s over 150 years old. Associated with durability, quality, sustainability and truly innovative design, it’s created from 97% natural raw materials, including flax, linseed, rosin and limestone.
Marmoleum flooring is versatile in application, colour and design. It can easily be fixed to your floor with low solvent adhesive, in keeping with its sustainable, eco-friendly attributes.

Both have distinct advantages and disadvantages, while different living and working environments suit different materials. We recognise that features of both are consistent across all environments. Therefore, we created this article to help you decide which flooring is best suited for your needs.
There is nothing more warming to your house than a nice fluffy carpet. They are soft on your feet and insulating in sound. When the weather is freezing outside, simply take off your shoes and walk barefoot across your shag piled carpet. A priceless experience!
#2 Keeping up with the trends
We’ve all seen your grandparents house with that red patterned carpet… You know the one! This is one of the drawbacks of going for an in-the-moment trendy range of carpets. Knowing when to update carpet is difficult to judge. Remember, patterned carpets will always go out of style.
If you are style conscious, you may find yourself replacing your carpet several times as the latest fad goes out of fashion. For longevity, purchase a more neutral colour with no pattern.
#3 That NEW carpet smell
Nothing beats that NEW carpet smell when you walk in the room! It’s very much like when your trying to sell your house – you’re told to put some bread backing in the oven. However, you may not know that that NEW carpet smell can also be a health hazard.
Most modern manufacturing methods of carpets use synthetic materials which can be hazardous. New carpets installations may use chemicals which emit harmful fumes. In fact, the carpet itself can leak for years. Exposed for extensive periods of time, these fumes can cause sinus or breathing problems. Bear this in mind when choosing your new carpet. We recommend more natural, eco-friendly carpets. But, like most things in life, this will increase the cost significantly.
On a plus side, modern technology has allowed more permanence into carpeting. Anti-fade colour fastness, near-perfect stain protection and even fireproofing can all be achieved. Although, always check with your supplier any toxic material that may be as a result.
#4 Carpets can be high maintenance
Of course, carpets require regular intensive cleaning. Hover your carpet daily, weekly or monthly. However, if you drop a glass of red wine, you may have to employ a specialist cleaning company. The more you hoover and the more traffic your carpet gets, the quicker it will deteriorate.
Even if you are an OCD person who hoovers your carpet twice a day, you can’t avoid the particles of dirt or dust. They will sift and sink through to the bottom, weaving and nestling near the floor. Spilling something, or even shampooing the carpet, will increase the dampness, rot and growth of mildew. On average, your carpet may have to be renewed as little as every five years.
#5 An allergy suffer’s nightmare
If you are unfortunate enough to be one of millions of individuals that suffer from allergies, a carpet is a living nightmare. Even with the best hoover and the most intense cleaning regime, your carpet is a constant source of dust, fluff, pollen, and even ‘dust mites’.
Unlike the aforementioned carpets, if you are an allergy sufferer, hardwood flooring is a sensible choice. It does not hide harmful particles, meaning an all round healthier and safer living environment. Typically, hardwood costs more than carpets.
However, you need to weigh up the benefits of hardwood flooring. Not only do they require less maintenance, they last longer too. Also, should you damage a section of your hardwood flooring, you can replace the damaged section rather than having to replace the whole floor.
Within an older home, unlike carpets, a hardwood floor can be colder on the feet and draftier. However, a well placed area of rug can immediately solve this problem.
#2 Very low maintenance
Fortunately, hardwood flooring requires very little maintenance. Compare the price for a hoover to clean your carpet with a mop and bucket to clean your hardwood floor, and the cost saving speaks for itself. Say you spill your glass of red wine on the floor: a simple dust pan and brush will clean the broken glass, while a jay cloth can mop up the wine. Hardwood floors are resilient in high traffic areas, making their lifespan possibly outlast you!
#3 Sustainable and eco-friendly
Your hardwood flooring is sourced from naturally occurring resources that can be reforested.
#4 Aesthetically beautiful and good value
The main reason for choosing a hardwood floor is its aesthetic look. It never going out of style and is one of the oldest flooring solutions. With a large variety of trees, you can get a wide choice of flooring, making each laid floor a unique experience. This includes different wood types, colours, designs and patterns.
Finally, while choosing hardwood flooring initially costs more than carpeting, with the proper maintenance, it will be a worthwhile investment. For both for longevity of trend and a beautiful look to your home, invest in hardwood flooring from Dovetail!
