With so many choices available on the market, it can often be overwhelming when it comes to finding your perfect sofa.
There are so many questions to consider. Fixed cushions? Lose cushions? High or low back? While these are all important factors, one question often overshadows all others: Fabric or leather upholstery?
To help you make the right decision, Dovetail have compiled a list of advantages and disadvantages for both choices. Now you can finally determine which style is best suited to you: fabric or leather?
Advantages of Fabric:
► Fabric sofas tend to provide greater comfort than leather. Traditionally, fabric is softer and more cosy than leather, which is often firm to the touch. While fabric upholstery maintains the same level of comfort year round, leather can become sticky and uncomfortable in the Summer heat and cold to the touch in Winter.
► Variety of colour and design is far greater. Leather is often restricted to a set range of colours, but fabric is unlimited in choice of pattern and design. Looking for a sofa to match your existing decor? Fabric sofas will make your search far easier!
► Fabric is not as susceptible to damage as leather. While leather can easily become scratched or dented, fabric can withstand pet claws or studs on jeans for far longer. Leather also needs to be regularly cleaned and conditioned every few months or else it will harden and crack. Fabric, meanwhile, has a far easier maintenance routine! A quick vacuum or steam-clean every couple of months will keep your sofa fresh and clean.
Disdvantages of Fabric:
► Stains and spills can prove lethal. Yes, fabric is unlikely to scratch as easily as leather, but a simple spill could stain your upholstery forever! Unless your fabric sofa has a stain-resistant finish, stains (such as mud, ink or tomato sauce) may never fully disappear. Leather, however, can typically be wiped clean – perfect for families will young children!
► Those with allergies, beware! Dust, pet dander and other allergens can easily be harbored in fabric. Leather, meanwhile, is hypoallergenic and can easily be wiped clean of dust or other irritants.
Advantages of Leather:
► It smells good! This may seem a stupid reason, but leather has an iconic smell that is immensely satisfying. After all, everyone loves a “new car” smell. Fabric, however, is porous. Therefore, it is more likely to absorb smells, be it food odour, take-away curry or a pet toilet emergency. We’d take a “new car” smell any day!
► The appearance of leather is timeless, classic and sophisticated. From a fashionable jacket to expensive car upholstery, leather suggests money, and plenty of it! Fabric, meanwhile, can be perceived as plain and practical. Timeless, yet modern, classic, yet contemporary, leather upholstery is a statement piece.
Disadvantages of Leather:
► Money, money, money! As with everything, quality fabric can be expensive, but leather will always be more expensive. While this is because you are paying for quality, not everybody has the money to spare. If you are on a budget, fabric is bar far the best option.
► As mentioned before, leather can be uncomfortable, especially in the Summer. Fabric is far more forgiving and soft for higher levels of comfort. However, leather may provide more support for those who suffer with back problems, so it’s rigidity is not always a negative.

Many people consider cane to be a great choice of material for garden furniture. However, Dovetail believe it is also a great investment for your home. And here are six reasons why!
Cane is a very versatile material. It can be used to create stunning chairs, tables and benches to enhance your home. Easy to bend, cane can be sculpted into elegant curves. This can be difficult to achieve with traditional wooden furniture.
Cane furniture can last for a long time. Moisture in the air keeps cane supple, preventing any cracks in its design. The fact cane is made from bamboo and rattan helps its durability. Compared to hardwoods, bamboo is far more resistant to damage. Also, it can resist swelling or shrinking. Rattan, too, is extremely durable and very difficult to break.
3) Low Cost
Cane is a cost effective alternative to traditional hardwoods, although it is just a durable. It’s low cost means you can easily replace and re-organise your furniture. Now you can keep your home or garden decor looking fresh and exciting!
Cane is extremely lightweight. No longer do you have to heave around heavy hardwood furniture – instead, cane can easily carried and placed where needed. Re-organising your home has never been so easy! This is especially useful for families with young children. Pieces can be moved to allow room to play. Afterwards, they can easily be returned to their original positions.
5) Low Maintenance
Cane furniture requires minimal maintenance. While hardwoods need frequent polishing and treatment, cane involves very little upkeep. An occasional polish to keep it looking fresh and stylish will be more than enough!
Cane is an eco-friendly alternative to hardwood. It is made from a combination of bamboo and rattan: both organically grown and sustainable materials. Also, the harvest of rattan in Southeast Asia helps provide poor locals with a source of income. Also, cane is very durable. This means you don’t have to frequently change your furniture, wasting less materials.

Now that it’s 2017, you may be thinking of giving you home a make-over.
But if you’re trying to decide between painting your walls or buying wallpaper, Dovetail have complied a list of the benefits of wallpaper for transforming you home!
#1 It’s durable
A common misconception is that wallpaper isn’t durable. It is! Wallpaper can easily withstand wear and tear, especially those that come with a vinyl protective surface. Wallpaper is also very easy to clean. Most can be cleaned with a light sponge, while many have scrubbable surfaces allowing for greater cleaning strength.
Paint, on the other hand, can chip easily if scraped or hit. Repairing and repainting can be difficult if you cannot find the same shade of paint. Filler paint may also be needed to fill in holes caused by chips. Already, the maintenance of painted walls can be far longer than simply scrubbing wallpaper.
#2 It’s not as expensive as you think
Many assume wallpaper is more expensive than paint. While this can be true, it isn’t always the case. Depending on the brand, you can find a variety of inexpensive wallpaper. In fact, some varieties of paint, such as textured or faux paint finishes, can end up being more expensive. If you were put wallpaper up yourself, costs can be further reduced by eliminating the need for installation. Plus, as mentioned before, wallpaper is actually very durable. You may end up saving money on your long term expenses with wallpaper as you don’t need to continually your walls!
#3 You get a variety of colours and prints
The main problem with paint is that is can be quite plain and boring. While wallpaper comes in a wide variety of patterns, styles and designs, you are limited to block colours with paint. Now, you may just want a plain colour, but where’s the fun in that? With wallpaper, you can have floral patterns, spots and stripes, or maybe even some Art Deco prints! You can add texture and depth to you walls – something a simple coat of paint cannot do.
The great thing about wallpaper is that it can completely transform a room. You may want a change of scenery in your living space but don’t want to spend too much money on buying new furniture or hiring an interior designer. Simply adding wallpaper is an effective way of changing the dynamic of your room. It can become fresh and exciting, all without having to dig deep into your pocket!

Dovetail supply a wide range of blinds and fabric curtains.
If you’re struggling to decide whether you want blinds or curtains for your home, we’ve compiled a list of advantages to help you decide which best suit your requirements…
Advantages of Blinds
1. Control the amount of light that enters the room.
It’s always annoying when the sun sits low in the sky while you’re trying to relax at home. It can create glare on your TV or phone, or cause you to squint uncomfortably when trying to have a conversation. But while curtains block out all natural light, you can simply adjust your blinds to the right length to satisfy your needs.
You can even adjust the slats on your blind to prevent the amount of sun that enters your room in the morning if you want a lie in. Indeed, if you struggle to get up in time for work, simply do the opposite!
2. Enjoy complete privacy in your home.
Blinds provide a level of privacy that curtains simply cannot provide. If you still want to enjoy natural light without having to sacrifice your privacy, you can install top-down shades. By lowering the shade from the top, natural light can come in whilst you enjoy as much privacy as you desire!
3. A timeless look.
One of the reasons blinds are so popular is that they are timeless. While many curtains become dated with time, often due to lavish patterns or colour schemes, the simplicity and durability of blinds ensure they stand the test of time.
4. A wide range of materials.
Blinds come in a wide variety of materials. This makes it easier for you to chose a blind that most suits your price range and compliments your room style. There are a wide range of materials you can choose from: wood, faux wood, plastic bamboo, aluminum… Materials that simply aren’t options if you want curtains!
Advantages of Curtains
1. Temperature control.
Curtains actually provide greater insulation for your home than blinds. Through the installation of a block-out curtain, you can stabilize your room temperature. Too cold? Keep the heat in. Too hot? Keep the cold out.
2. Greater durability.
In order to keep modern blinds clean, they can be wiped down with a damp sponge and mild detergent. However, this ultimately leads to breakdown, especially with blinds made of acrylic material, when exposed to the elements. Curtains are far more resilient to the elements and are also easier to replace or clean, therefore giving them a far longer lease of life.
3. Ability to block out sound and light.
There is evidence that curtains can block out sounds to up to 12 decibels! That’s perfect for if you live near a busy road where the constant traffic may interrupt your sleep. Blinds simply cannot offer the same level of noise insulation, nor can they block out the same level of light. If you like to sleep in the pitch black, black-out curtains are your best option.
4. Greater customization!
Curtains are extremely customizable as they come in all colors, patterns and styles. Do you have a particular theme in your bedroom or living room? You can purchase curtains to accent or enhance the color scheme of your room. While blinds can offer a variety of materials, they don’t have the same versatility of pattern or colours as a set of curtains.
Whether you decide to go for blinds or curtains, at Dovetail, you’re guaranteed to find the perfect match for your home! Visit our Norwich showroom at 226 – 236 Sprowston Road, Norwich, NR3 4HT or give us a call on 01603 488082.
