Did you know the average person spends one third of their life asleep?
Unbelievably, this translates as roughly 229,961 hours per person, per lifetime. That’s an incredible amount of time spent in bed! But with so much time spent asleep, it’s important that your mattress is up to the job.
With so many mattresses to choose from, the task can be daunting.
But that’s where our handy guide comes in. Follow our easy steps and soon the perfect mattress will be yours!
Step 1: Do you NEED a new mattress?
Most experts believe that you should change your mattress every 8 years. However, depending on the quality and make of the mattress, this timeframe can easily change. Therefore, the decision ultimately comes down to you. Are your sleeping patterns being affected? Do you find it hard to sleep through the night? Perhaps you feel restless during the night, or even wake up in pain? These are all signs that you may need a new mattress.
Step 2: What KIND of mattress do you need?
This is where things can get difficult. There are many types of mattress to chose from, each with their own benefits. Ultimately, you want a mattress that will support you while you sleep, while also providing high levels of comfort.
If you suffer from a bad back, you want a mattress with optimal support, perhaps with memory foam. If you sleep on your side, it is likely you rotate throughout the night from side to side. Therefore, you want a mattress with soft to medium level firmness, to help relieve pressure points on your back and neck.
Below is a selection of Sherbourne mattresses that we have in stock, as well as their main features:
Royal – a deep, luxurious, ten inch mattress, featuring three layers of supportive foam and an additional layer of memory foam. Provides softness and temperature control for a perfect night’s sleep.
Victoria – deep layers of latex, memory and base foams, plus a ‘cool-max’ cover, help to alleviate overheating problems. Latex foam also provides optimal support, helping to keep the spine straight.
Deluxe – features a generous layer of pressure-relieving memory foam over a thicker, supportive layer of reflex foam.
Also features a ‘cool-max’ cover to alleviate any overheating problems.
Marquis – a slimline, low-cost mattress consisting of 6.3 inches of supportive standard foam. Also features a ‘cool-max’ cover to alleviate any overheating problems.

In fact, after several years of feedback and experience, Sherbourne have finally developed an improved and extended range for 2017… Now available at Dovetail Furniture!

Their exceptional strength allows the user to easily be lifted a standing position. If required, the bed can even be fitted with cot sides too.
With a wide range of adjustable beds to choose from, we’re sure you will find the perfect bed to fulfil your needs. But just why is choosing the right bed so important?
According to a recent study by SilentNight, people in the UK lose, on average, seven days sleep each year. This means people are only getting six and a half hours sleep per night, instead of the recommended seven to nine!
Losing such a large amount of sleep can have bad implications for your health. Yes, it can result in short-term symptoms, such as fatigue, short temper and lack of focus. But did you know it can develop into more serious health issues, including heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes?
There are many factors which could result in a lack of sleep:
1) Stress is a key player. Too much stress can cause tension and anxiety, resulting in sleep problems. It can even result in insomnia as our brain find it difficult to shut down and get to sleep. Therefore, it is recommended that you avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine before going to bed. This can help reduce your stress levels, if only slightly.
2) Poor lifestyle decisions can impact sleep too. How many of the following apply to you?
✓ Irregular sleeping patterns
✓ Regular napping
✓ Drinking coffee late in the day
✓ Consumption of sugary foods/heavy meals before bed
✓ Not enough exercise
These are all too common examples of bad habits that impact your ability to get a good nights sleep. If you’ve answered yes to more than one of these, it’s time you reconsidered your bedtime routine!
3) Modern technology also causes problems. We’re all guilty of checking our phones before bed. However, did you know the blue light emitted by our laptops, phones and televisions prevent the production of melatonin, a hormone that controls our sleeping cycle? Reducing our melatonin makes it harder to fall asleep.Instead, our brain remains awake and alert. Try half an hour of “screen-free” time before bed, allowing your body to wind down before sleep.
Choosing the right bed can help combat lack of sleep.
Some people believe finding the “dream bed” is difficult, but Dovetail think it’s easy! Sherbourne offer strength and support that few other beds do. Still unsure? Follow our advice and you’ll soon find your perfect bed.
Step one: test out your bed.
Everyone is built differently, so not all beds will correctly support you. By testing before you buy, you’ll prevent an uncomfortable night’s sleep on a bed that’s simply not designed for your weight or build. All of the Sherbourne adjustable beds listed on our site are displayed in our Norwich showroom, so feel free to pop by for a trial!
Step two: look for back support.
If you suffer from a back pain you may find it difficult to sleep. And when you don’t get enough sleep, your pain can get worse! Sherbourne beds are great for those who suffer with back pain; they can lift the user into a sitting position for ease of getting out of bed. Furthermore, their quality mattresses feature three layers of supportive foam, as well as an additional layer of memory foam. Now your back will feel supported all through the night!
Step three: stretch out!
p>When you test a bed, make sure there’s enough room for you to spread out during the night. There’s nothing worse than being cramped in the corner of your matress while your partner dominates the bed. If that’s a common problem, maybe you should invest in a king size bed instead? That’s not a problem for Sherbourne beds – all their beds come in a variety of sizes, ranging from 2 to 6 feet!
Step four: the design.
Choosing a bed is not all about comfort. It’s got to be stylish too! Sherbourne beds come in a variety of headboard designs. Think about what character you want. Modern and minimalist? Or maybe something a bit different. We recommend this Countess headboard if you’re looking for something fun and eye-catching!
We hope this blog post has proven useful and that you find your “dream bed” very soon.

Dovetail have a wide range of sofas at our Norwich showroom.
But with so many different styles, colours and fabrics on show, the choice can be overwhelming. There’s no need to worry, however. Dovetail has compiled an easy step-by-step guide for choosing the best sofa for your home. Sofa shopping has never been so easy!
► Step One: Size
Let’s start with the easiest decision: size. You need to think about where you will place your sofa and how much space is on offer. There’s no point splashing the cash on a reclining three-seater if it’s going to be cramped in a corner of a room! If you have a small living space, a compact design will be more suitable. L-shaped sofas are a great way to work around minimal space: they can easily slot in the corner of your room. Those who are lucky enough to have a large amount of space, feel free to experiment with a variety of shapes and designs.
Also, it’s important to consider who will spending time on the sofa. If you have a large family (or sofa-hogging pets), three- to four-seater sofas provide ample room. No one wants to squashed while trying to watch the telly!
► Step Two: Shape
We’ve already touched on this, so it’s our logical next step. The shape of your sofa can help enhance your living space if chosen correctly. Do you have a kitchen-come-living room? An L-shaped sofa for a perfect room divider. If you have a small living space, round sofas are brilliant at opening up the area. They are also suitable for gathering areas, such as a TV room or conservatory, due to their open, welcoming design. Which leads us to our next step…
► Step Three: Function
How will you spend the majority of your time on your sofa? Sounds like a stupid question (sitting, of course!) but it helps you to pick a sofa best suited to your needs. If your living room is a relaxing space where you watch TV and read books, a comfortable sofa with multiple cushions is the perfect choice. You could even be decadent and treat yourself to a recliner!
Maybe socialising is more your thing? If you love coffee mornings and having a natter with friends, an L-shaped sofa is a great choice as it can easily fit around a coffee table. Do your friends often find themselves staying the night? You could consider purchasing a futon or day-bed.
► Step Four: Ergonomics
Do you suffer from a bad back? Lack of suitable back support will only make things worse. Did you know we spend eight years and ten months of our lives watching TV? Well, with so much time spent sitting on our sofas, it’s important your sofa has substantial back support. Firm cushions and upright backs are good choices. However, if your back pain is so bad you have issues getting out your chair, you could consider a reclining sofa. This provides additional support and prevents you from straining your back when you try to get up.
► Step Five: Material
We’ve already written a whole blog post about this step. Why not check it out? Make sure you come back and finish reading this blog once you’re done though!
► Step Six: Design
So you’ve reached the final (and most fun!) step of choosing the best sofa for your home: the design. It’s important to pick a design that compliments your home’s aesthetic. If it’s quite traditional, a neutral design will stay classic for years to come; if it’s modern or minimalist, clean and sleek lines are a great choice. A sofa will a funky print is perfect for a home experimenting with a variety of styles and colours!
Now you’ve read our step-by-step guide, it’s time for you to get sofa shopping!

Picking the right dining table is important. It needs to be comfortable and stylish, but also needs to suit your unique lifestyle.
At Dovetail, we supply a wide range of dining tables. With only the best brand-named furniture on offer, we are sure you will find the perfect set-up for your home.
However, with so many designs, colours, sizes and shapes on offer, it can be difficult to know where to start. But don’t worry! Have a read our handy guide to dining tables, and soon you will find your perfect match.
How do I know what shape to choose?
This part is quite straightforward. The shape of your dining table will be determined by the shape of your room. For instance, your room may be a long rectangle, so an oval or rectangle table will best compliment your space. You may live in a small flat and need a table for your kitchen-come-dining room. A square and circular table will make the most of your limited space.
What are the suitable measurements?
This is the most important factor for your dining table, so it is crucial to get right. The last thing you want is to scratch the wall every time you pull out a chair! For this stage, we recommend getting out your measuring tape.
To rise and push back your chair comfortably, a minimum gap of 36 inches from the table edge to the wall is needed. However, the more space the better. We suggest 42 to 48 inches to be safe.
Don’t be greedy with your table size. If the size of your room will only allow you to seat 8, don’t opt for a 12-seat table. Less is more when aiming for a comfortable fit. However, if you are desperate for a larger table, there are ways to cheat! Removable leafs allow you to extend your table for special events – but remember to check if it fits in your room when full size.
Each guest requires at least 24 inches of table space. Make sure an additional 12 inches are added for rectangular tables where people are seated at the head and foot.
Hate being elbowed while trying to eat? 30 inches of table space ensures adequate elbow room! Also, if a member of your family is known for their long legs, tables with pedestal bases (a single, centre leg for support) provide extra leg room. This prevents a tangle of table legs and chairs too.
The height of your dining table is very important. The majority of tables are 30 inches high, while chairs are 18 inches (measured from the base to the seat). The 12 inches of space between the table top and chair seat will provide comfortable leg and lap room.
How many people will my table seat?
Different table shapes will seat different numbers of people. For example, circular tables will generally seat less than rectangular ones. Be sure to take this into consideration when browsing.
The following measurements determines the number of people that can comfortably be seated:
► 72 inches – 6 people
► 96 inches – 8 people
► 120 inches – 10 people
► 36 to 48 inches – 4 people
► 60 inches – 6 people
► 72 inches – 8 people
Which designs and materials will best suit my room?
With so many dining tables to choose from, you are bound to find a design which compliments your space. For a modern, contemporary feel, a combination of metal and wood is a great choice. It creates an industrial look, which is on trend at the moment. Sharp angles and sleek angles add to the effect.
Searching for a more traditional design? Minimal design and chunky legs provide a practical, classic look, while reclaimed wood creates a warm, rustic style. If you’re looking to brighten up your room, a whitewash finish is the perfect choice. For the opposite effect, dark wood create a dramatic look in brighter rooms.
Remember to choose a design and material that suits your lifestyle. If you have children, you need a hard-wearing table that withstands stains, scratches and spills. Reclaimed wood is a great choice, as its distressed looks will mask any dents and add additional character.

With so many choices available on the market today, it can often be overwhelming when it comes to finding your perfect sofa.
There are so many questions to consider. Fixed cushions? Lose cushions? High or low back? Traditional or modern? While these are all important factors, one question often overshadows all others: Fabric or leather upholstery?
To help you make the right decision, Dovetail have compiled a list of advantages and disadvantages for both upholstery choices. Now you can finally determine which style is best suited to you: fabric or leather?
Advantages of Fabric:
► Fabric sofas tend to provide greater comfort than leather. Traditionally, fabric is softer and more cosy than leather, which is often firm to the touch. While fabric upholstery maintains the same level of comfort year round, leather can become sticky and uncomfortable in the Summer heat and cold to the touch in Winter.
► Variety of colour and design is far greater. Leather is often restricted to a set range of colours, but fabric is unlimited in choice of pattern and design. Looking for a sofa to match your existing decor? Fabric sofas will make your search far easier!
► Fabric is not as susceptible to damage as leather. While leather can easily become scratched or dented, fabric can withstand pet claws or studs on jeans for far longer. Leather also needs to be regularly cleaned and conditioned every few months or else it will harden and crack. Fabric, meanwhile, has a far easier maintenance routine! A quick vacuum or steam-clean every couple of months will keep your sofa fresh and clean.
Disdvantages of Fabric:
► Stains and spills can prove lethal. Yes, fabric is unlikely to scratch as easily as leather, but a simple spill could stain your upholstery forever! Unless your fabric sofa has a stain-resistant finish, stains (such as mud, ink or tomato sauce) may never fully disappear. Leather, however, can typically be wiped clean – perfect for families will young children!
► Those with allergies, beware! Dust, pet dander and other allergens can easily be harbored in fabric. Leather, meanwhile, is hypoallergenic and can easily be wiped clean of dust or other irritants.
Advantages of Leather:
► It smells good! This may seem a stupid reason, but leather has an iconic smell that is immensely satisfying. After all, everyone loves a “new car” smell. Fabric, however, is porous. Therefore, it is more likely to absorb smells, be it food odour, take-away curry or a pet toilet emergency. We’d take a “new car” smell any day!
► The appearance of leather is timeless, classic and sophisticated. From a fashionable jacket to expensive car upholstery, leather suggests money, and plenty of it! Fabric, meanwhile, can be perceived as plain and practical. Timeless, yet modern, classic, yet contemporary, leather upholstery is a statement piece.
Disadvantages of Leather:
► Money, money, money! As with everything, quality fabric can be expensive, but leather will always be more expensive. While this is because you are paying for quality, not everybody has the money to spare. If you are on a budget, fabric is bar far the best option.
► As mentioned before, leather can be uncomfortable, especially in the Summer. Fabric is far more forgiving and soft for higher levels of comfort. However, leather may provide more support for those who suffer with back problems, so it’s rigidity is not always a negative.
Dovetail sell a wide range of leather and fabric upholstery. Now you have read the advantages and disadvantages of each material, visit our Norwich showroom and choose the perfect sofa to suit your needs.
Many people consider cane to be a great choice of material for garden furniture. However, Dovetail believe it is also a great investment for your home. Here are six reasons to why cane furniture is the perfect choice for you!
Cane is a very versatile material. It can be used to create stunning chairs, tables and benches to enhance your home. Easy to bend, cane can be sculpted into elegant curves. This can be difficult to achieve with traditional wooden furniture.
Cane furniture can last for a long time. Moisture in the air keeps cane supple, preventing any cracks in its design. The fact cane is made from bamboo and rattan helps its durability. Compared to hardwoods, bamboo is far more resistant to damage. Also, it can resist swelling or shrinking. Rattan, too, is extremely durable and very difficult to break.
3) Low Cost:
Cane is a cost effective alternative to traditional hardwoods, although it is just a durable. It’s low cost means you can easily replace and re-organise your furniture. Now you can keep your home or garden decor looking fresh and exciting!
Cane is extremely lightweight. No longer do you have to heave around heavy hardwood furniture – instead, cane can easily carried and placed where needed. Re-organising your home has never been so easy! This is especially useful for families with young children. Pieces can be moved to allow room to play. Afterwards, they can easily be returned to their original positions.
5) Low Maintenance:
Cane furniture requires minimal maintenance. While hardwoods need frequent polishing and treatment, cane involves very little upkeep. An occasional polish to keep it looking fresh and stylish will be more than enough!
Cane is an eco-friendly alternative to hardwood. It is made from a combination of bamboo and rattan: both organically grown and sustainable materials. Also, the harvest of rattan in Southeast Asia helps provide poor locals with a source of income. Also, cane is very durable. This means you don’t have to frequently change your furniture, wasting less materials.
Dovetail sell a large range of cane furniture. Check out our range by clicking here. We believe they make a great choice of decor for both your home and garden!
