An adjustable bed can enrich your sleep experience while aiding the improvement of various health problems.
Health Benefit #1 | Reduce Back Pain
Adjust the head and foot of the mattress to support the spine and alleviate pressure on the sciatic nerve. The longest and largest nerve in the human body, the sciatic nerve runs from the lower back to the back of the leg. Those suffering from sciatica (pain, numbness, and/or weakness along the sciatic nerve) should contour the mattress to the body, as this will greatly improve the pain.
To relieve pressure on the spine, slant the head by 45 degrees. You can also raise the foot of the bed to bend the knees and deviate the legs. Angling the head will also reduce neck ache.
Health Benefit #2 | Relieve Snoring & Sleep Apnea
Snoring occurs when the upper airway vibrates from turbulent airflow when breathing. Nearly 40% of men and 24% of women snore; however, those who sleep flat on their backs are more susceptible. This is because the airway is more subject to close as the weight of your neck or chest press down on the windpipe, blocking adequate airflow. Therefore, adjust your bed to lift up the head, taking weight off the windpipe and reducing your snoring.
Similar to snoring, sleep apnea can be reduced simply by raising the head of the adjustable bed. Sleeping in an angled position reduces obstructions from the nasal passages and improves airflow, for healthy, uninterrupted sleep; by simply lifting the head, sinus pressure will be naturally relieved.
Health Benefit #3 | Enhance Circulation
The better your circulation in the night, the better your quality of sleep. Blood circulation can be enhanced by adjusting your bed into a zero gravity position. Developed for astronauts, the position relieves the pressure on the spine and body during take-off. Simply lie on your back, then raise your legs and head above your heart. This evenly distributes the weight on your body in a relaxed state.
With the aid of the adjustable bed base, sleepers can fine-tune sleep positions to reduce pressure allowing for blood to flow to the heart, and throughout the body. For those with specific circulation issues, the adjustable frame allows for the mattress to be positioned to a recommended level to enhance blood and oxygen flow.
As we become more environmentally conscious, it can be difficult to find eco-friendly furnishings.
However, cane and rattan furniture provide a really good alternative to traditional hardwood. Brands like Desser and Cane Industries provide good quality furniture that are sustainable and look good.
Rattan is a naturally renewable palm that grows in diverse forests across Africa and Asia.
Incredibly, rattan grows over 2 centimetres per day. To put this into perspective, this means it grows up to 6 metres every year! Rattan can be fully grown and harvested within two years, compared to some hardwoods which take up to 20-30 years. Therefore, rattan is a completely sustainable product that is environmentally friendly.
Rattan helps to sustain numerous other plants and landscapes. As a runner, it relies on other trees and vegetation for survival. Therefore, rattan harvesters are encouraged to preserve the rainforests where it is found. Rattan also grows in harsh conditions, such as in floodwater, that would usually make land unusable.
Across Asia, rattan is an invaluable part of rural people’s livelihoods.
Rattan crops support many small holdings across South and Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, where it is grown and harvested. It provides people in these local communities with a regular, reliable income in an uncomplicated industry with a focus on labour-intensive management.
How do the rattan furniture brands that Dovetail stock ensure they are eco-friendly?
Desser promotes fair trade ethics across their company. In a statement on their website, they reveal they “abide by a low carbon emission business plan” to “provide [their] customers with environmentally friendly furnishings.”
In 2011, Daro was awarded a made-aware status for its rattan furniture by LOFA (The Leisure and Outdoor Furniture Association). This means they work closely with rattan suppliers to reduce the carbon footprint of their products.
From watching TV to snoozing and snacking, Britons are the ultimate couch potatoes. So much so, a 2008 study revealed we spend a staggering 17 years sitting on the sofa!
With figures like these, it’s clearly worth investing in a good quality sofa. An essential item for any home, it’s not a purchase to make lightly, or without considered thought.
There are five keys points to assess when choosing in a sofa: size, style, comfort, longevity and practicality. Ignore these criteria, and the result is a sofa that simply isn’t suited to your needs.
To avoid such an outcome, Dovetail have compiled a step-by-step guide to choosing a sofa, following the key points mentioned above. Follow our advice and you’ll find your perfect sofa in no time!
Step 1 | Size
Be honest with yourself: do you really have the space for a massive sofa? If your room is small, an oversized sofa will make it look more cramped than it actually is. Those short on living space should instead opt for a sofa with low or no arms, as this will create the illusion of a larger room.
On the other hand, should you have a relatively large living room, don’t go overboard on size. Remember that other furniture items, such as TV stands, coffee tables and perhaps other chairs, still need to fit in comfortably.
Step 2 | Style
Think about the intention of your space. Do you envision a formal living room, or a stylish spot for occasional entertaining? A stand-alone sofa presents a sleeker, cleaner line. A sectional sofa is far more roomy and inviting, creating a more casual space that’s perfect for watching TV or snoozing!
Step 3 | Comfort
How do you sit on your sofa? It may seem like a stupid question, but everyone lounges differently.
It’s really important to consider seat depth. You may prefer to slouch into your cushions rather than sit upright when watching TV; therefore, if you choose a sofa with too shallow a seat, you will shift awkwardly as you try to find a comfortable position. Your sofa is now a wasted investment!
Here is a quick overview of sofa seat depths. 18 inches is a sleek, modern look, but very upright and uncomfortable to sit on. 22 inches is the minimum for a comfortable seat, but still presents a sleek design. 24 inches is just deep enough to lie across, while 33 inches has the ultimate “snuggle factor”.
Step 4 | Longevity
Different fabrics ware better than others over time. For example, chenille, while soft and silky, stretches and warps over time. Likewise, vinyl is a cheaper alternative to leather, but tends to be less comfortable and cracks with age.
Meanwhile, ensure your sofa has a hardwood frame. This could be oak, teak, beech or mahogany, but avoid softwoods such as pine or spruce. Furthermore, check it is held together with screws and dowels rather than glued and stapled chipboard; these can easily break and will not last as long.
Step 5 | Practicality
Do you have young children or pets? Then be sensible with your choice of fabric. Cotton-velvet is a family favourite; it’s plush, wears well, and comes in a variety of patterns and shades that can help camouflage any unwanted stains!
Leather is another popular choice for families; it’s wipe-clean, so any spills or stains can easily be erased. However, it’s susceptible to scratches, so is best avoided by pet owners, as well as wool, satin and velvet. Instead, invest in more pet-friendly fabrics, such as distressed leather and microfibre.
The average person spends one third of their life asleep.
Unbelievably, this translates as roughly 229,961 hours per person, per lifetime. That’s an incredible amount of time spent in bed! But with so much time spent asleep, it’s important that your mattress is up to the job.
With so many mattresses to choose from, the task can be daunting.
Follow our easy steps and soon the perfect mattress will be yours!
Step 1: Do you NEED a new mattress?
Most experts believe that you should change your mattress every 8 years. However, depending on the quality and make of the mattress, this timeframe can easily change. Therefore, the decision ultimately comes down to you. Are your sleeping patterns being affected? Do you find it hard to sleep through the night? Perhaps you feel restless during the night, or even wake up in pain? These are all signs that you may need a new mattress.
Step 2: What KIND of mattress do you need?
This is where things can get difficult. There are many types of mattress to chose from, each with their own benefits. Ultimately, you want a mattress that will support you while you sleep, while also providing high levels of comfort.
If you suffer from a bad back, you want a mattress with optimal support, perhaps with memory foam. If you sleep on your side, it is likely you rotate throughout the night from side to side. You want a mattress with soft to medium level firmness, to help relieve pressure points on your back and neck.
Below is a selection of Sherbourne mattresses that we have in stock, as well as their main features:
Royal – a deep, luxurious, ten inch mattress, featuring three layers of supportive foam and an additional layer of memory foam. It also provides softness and temperature control.
Victoria – deep layers of latex, memory and base foams, plus a ‘cool-max’ cover, help to alleviate overheating problems. Latex foam offers optimal support, helping to keep the spine straight.
Deluxe – features a generous layer of pressure-relieving memory foam over a thicker, supportive layer of reflex foam.
Also features a ‘cool-max’ cover to alleviate any overheating problems.
Marquis – a slimline, low-cost mattress consisting of 6.3 inches of supportive standard foam. Also features a ‘cool-max’ cover to alleviate any overheating problems.

With a wide range of adjustable beds to choose from, we’re sure you will find the perfect bed to fulfil your needs. But just why is choosing the right bed so important?
According to a recent study by SilentNight, people in the UK lose, on average, seven days sleep each year. This means people are only getting six and a half hours sleep per night, instead of the recommended seven to nine!
Losing such a large amount of sleep can have bad implications for your health. Yes, it can result in short-term symptoms, such as fatigue, short temper and lack of focus. But did you know it can develop into more serious health issues, including heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes?
There are many factors which could result in a lack of sleep:
1) Stress is a key player. Too much stress can cause tension and anxiety, resulting in sleep problems. It can even result in insomnia as our brain find it difficult to shut down and get to sleep. Therefore, it is recommended that you avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine before going to bed. This can help reduce your stress levels, if only slightly.
2) Poor lifestyle decisions can impact sleep too. How many of the following apply to you?
✓ Irregular sleeping patterns
✓ Regular napping
✓ Drinking coffee late in the day
✓ Consumption of sugary foods/heavy meals before bed
✓ Not enough exercise
These are all too common examples of bad habits that impact your ability to get a good nights sleep. If you’ve answered yes to more than one of these, it’s time you reconsidered your bedtime routine!
3) Modern technology also causes problems. We’re all guilty of checking our phones before bed. However, did you know the blue light emitted by our laptops, phones and televisions prevent the production of melatonin, a hormone that controls our sleeping cycle? Reducing our melatonin makes it harder to fall asleep.Instead, our brain remains awake and alert. Try half an hour of “screen-free” time before bed, allowing your body to wind down before sleep.
Choosing the right bed can help combat lack of sleep.
Some people believe finding the “dream bed” is difficult, but Dovetail think it’s easy! Sherbourne offer strength and support that few other beds do. Follow our advice to find your perfect bed.
Step one: test out your bed.
Everyone is built differently, so not all beds will correctly support you. By testing before you buy, you’ll prevent an uncomfortable night’s sleep on a bed that’s simply not designed for your weight or build. All of the Sherbourne adjustable beds listed on our site are displayed in our Norwich showroom, so feel free to pop by for a trial!
Step two: look for back support.
If you suffer from a back pain you may find it difficult to sleep. And when you don’t get enough sleep, your pain can get worse! Sherbourne beds are great for those who suffer with back pain; they can lift the user into a sitting position for ease of getting out of bed. Furthermore, their quality mattresses feature three layers of supportive foam, as well as an additional layer of memory foam. Now your back will feel supported all through the night!
Step three: stretch out!
p>When you test a bed, make sure there’s enough room for you to spread out during the night. There’s nothing worse than being cramped in the corner of your matress while your partner dominates the bed. If that’s a common problem, maybe you should invest in a king size bed instead? That’s not a problem for Sherbourne beds – all their beds come in a variety of sizes, ranging from 2 to 6 feet!
Step four: the design.
Choosing a bed is not all about comfort. It’s got to be stylish too! Sherbourne beds come in a variety of headboard designs. Think about what character you want. Modern and minimalist? Or maybe something a bit different. We recommend this Countess headboard if you’re looking for something fun and eye-catching!
We hope this post is useful and that you find your “dream bed” very soon.

Dovetail have a wide range of sofas in our showroom.
But with so many different styles, colours and fabrics on show, the choice can be overwhelming. There’s no need to worry, however. Dovetail has compiled an easy step-by-step guide for choosing the best sofa for your home. Sofa shopping has never been so easy!
Step One: Size
Let’s start with the easiest decision: size. You need to think about where you will place your sofa and how much space is on offer. There’s no point splashing the cash on a reclining three-seater if it’s going to be cramped in a corner of a room! If you have a small living space, a compact design will be more suitable. L-shaped sofas are a great way to work around minimal space: they can easily slot in the corner of your room. Those who are lucky enough to have a large amount of space, feel free to experiment with a variety of shapes and designs.
Also, it’s important to consider who will spending time on the sofa. If you have a large family (or sofa-hogging pets), three- to four-seater sofas provide ample room. No one wants to squashed while trying to watch the telly!
Step Two: Shape
We’ve already touched on this, so it’s our logical next step. The shape of your sofa can help enhance your living space if chosen correctly. Do you have a kitchen-come-living room? An L-shaped sofa for a perfect room divider. If you have a small living space, round sofas are brilliant at opening up the area. They are also suitable for gathering areas, such as a TV room or conservatory, due to their open, welcoming design. Which leads us to our next step…
Step Three: Function
How will you spend the majority of your time on your sofa? Sounds like a stupid question (sitting, of course!) but it helps you to pick a sofa best suited to your needs. If your living room is a relaxing space where you watch TV and read books, a comfortable sofa with multiple cushions is the perfect choice. You could even be decadent and treat yourself to a recliner!
Maybe socialising is more your thing? If you love coffee mornings and having a natter with friends, an L-shaped sofa is a great choice as it can easily fit around a coffee table. Do your friends often find themselves staying the night? You could consider purchasing a futon or day-bed.
Step Four: Ergonomics
Do you suffer from a bad back? Lack of suitable back support will only make things worse. Did you know we spend eight years and ten months of our lives watching TV? Well, with so much time spent sitting on our sofas, it’s important your sofa has substantial back support. Firm cushions and upright backs are good choices. However, if your back pain is so bad you have issues getting out your chair, you could consider a reclining sofa. This provides additional support and prevents you from straining your back when you try to get up.
Step Five: Material
We’ve already written a whole blog post about this step. Why not check it out? Make sure you come back and finish reading this blog once you’re done though!
Step Six: Design
So you’ve reached the final (and most fun!) step of choosing the best sofa for your home: the design. It’s important to pick a design that compliments your home’s aesthetic. If it’s quite traditional, a neutral design will stay classic for years to come; if it’s modern or minimalist, clean and sleek lines are a great choice. A sofa will a funky print is perfect for a home experimenting with a variety of styles and colours!
Now you’ve read our step-by-step guide, it’s time for you to get sofa shopping!
