Dovetail have a variety of blinds on show at their Norwich showroom.
With big brands available, including Decora, Regal, Sunway and Velix, you will be spoilt for choice! So spoilt, in fact, that you may find it difficult to decide which blinds to choose…
There are lots of factors to consider when making your choice: from style to fit, the decisions can be overwhelming. But fear not! As ever, Dovetail have compiled a handy guide on how to choose the perfect blinds for your home.
Dovetail have already written a blog on the benefits of blinds (which you can read by clicking here), so we recommend you read this before getting started. All finished? Good, let’s get going…
Step 1) What style should you choose?
Choosing a style of blind can be difficult. However, Dovetail have broken down each style below so you can see what room each are suited for, as well as how they work and their ease of cleaning.
Vertical Blinds: made of vertical lengths of fabric, vertical blinds can be tilted to control your privacy and the amount of light entering the room. These are perfectly suited to all rooms, including conservatories, bedrooms and bathrooms. Depending on the fabric, the blinds can either be hoovered, wiped clean or put in the washing machine.
Venetian blinds: an iconic blind design, this style consists of metal slats in horizontal rows. Again suited to all rooms, the slats can easily be adjusted to control both privacy and the amount of light entering the room. The metallic material allows for a quick and easy wipe clean: no fussing about with hovers or washing machines!
Roller blinds: this style can easily be lifted and lowered around a tube situated at the top of the window. Fabric-based, the material can be wiped clean with either a dry or wet cloth. A great choice for any room, this blind comes in a variety of patterns, unlike the Venetian and vertical blinds which can be limited to a block colour.
Roman blinds: luxurious and sophisticated, Roman blinds are made from rolls of fabric that create a waterfall effect when lifted. Therefore, they are best suited to bedrooms or living rooms: anywhere to create a stylish look. As they are made of fabric, it is best to either hoover or dry-clean the blinds.
Pleated blinds: when rolled up, pleated blinds create a concertina effect. Available in a variety of fabrics and patterns, these blinds are perfect for any room and can easily be wiped clean by a dry cloth.
Step 2) What is the function of the blind?
It is important to consider the function of the blind. As mentioned before, blinds are great for adjusting the amount of light entering a room, while also allowing you to control your privacy. If your main concern is light control, Venetian blinds are your best choice. While they may not come in a wide variety of decorative patterns (unlike Roman and roller blinds) they are effective and easy to use.
Indeed, if your blinds will serve a multitude of functions, it might be an idea to pair them with some curtains (which Dovetail also stock). This provides more flexibility for the room.
Step 3) Where are your blinds situated?
If you are thinking of placing your blinds in a place where there will be water involved (e.g. kitchens and bathrooms), roller blinds are your best bet due to their protective material coating.
Do you need a pitch black room to sleep at night? If you are searching for bedroom blinds, it may be best to choose some with a blackout lining. Now no light will be let in from outside, allowing you to sleep in complete darkness.
Are you looking for blinds for your children’s room? It is important that you choose blinds that meet legislation on safe fitting: this means they either have a spring mechanism or are cordless. To find out more, click here.
